Recognize the line in the subject? Then you know what this is about.

As you may know, Peter Jackson sued New Line due to their "creative accounting" ... That suit has now been settled, and in a dramatic way ...

The Hobbit has been greenlit, along with a sequel.

Peter Jackson will be directing. The production team will be the same as on the Lord of the Rings movies. Filming will begin 2009, with the Hobbit released in 2010 and the new sequel released in 2011.

These movies will be co-produced by New Line and MGM. New Line will release them in North America, MGM everywhere else.

More info can be found on The One Ring website and yahoo news.

I was hoping that someone else would get it. Jackson just isn't very good. Oh well, we'll always have Bass-Rankin.

While Jackson is planning to produce The Hobbit and its sequel, it has been leaked that Sam Raimi is being tapped to direct the two films. JLS

Yeah, Jackson will be the producer, not the director.

I'm not sure why there will be a sequel though. Each of the LoTRs books had one movie. The Hobbit isn't that long. They can't do it in one movie?

They are planning to do the complete Hobbit in the first movie, then do a segue movie that takes place between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.

Ah. Thanks. Although I'm a fan of Tolkien's Hobbit and LoTRs, I haven't read much beyond those books. What will the sequel be based on?

They're saying here that Jackson decided to divide the book up into two movies:

"Two “Hobbit” films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three “Lord of the Rings” films were made all at once. Shaye and Sloan both said it was Jackson’s idea to divide the story, adapted from Tolkien’s first book about Middle Earth (which was about half the length of any from the trilogy that followed)."
