So Dungeons and Dragons is going into fourth edition. Thoughts? Comments?

I don't know what little I have seen looks very bad. Clerics look like they are changing into only bluff bots and light combat, but I guess that may be a little better then a heal bot.

I think they are moving to bring on board new people by simplfing the game. In itself it's a great idea.

Here is the Pro:
They bring on more people who don't want to get so involved in a game. This can generate more money for them...they are a for profit company.

Con:
They are not continuing 3.5. HELLOOO>....most people I talk to don't like 4th edition. The company is now leaving a huge gaping hole of people they will no longer supply to. We are, after all, the brunt of their customers. They are leaving the rest of us behind.

Why:
They are either doing it because they think we will keep on playing (a very good possibility) and/or they think they can swing over more new people greater than their core group (also a very good possibility).

You know there are still people playing 2nd edition so people can either still play 3.5, move to 4th, or find a different game.

Any other choices?

Almost every design decision I've read about so far has sounded really good to mo. I've already pre-ordered the game from Amazon and am looking forward to it.

I'm really interested in what they have done. I'd really like to see how the online component works towards fostering face to face gaming.

The first adventure has been hitting stores with a preview copy and I'm thinking of trying to have one of them let me demo it for them.

We did a test run of Keep on the Shadowfell last weekend (continuing it tomorrow). I was very much against 4th edition but I had a lot of fun playing it, and I'm actually looking forward to tomorrow's continuation.

I disagree with the notion that clerics are just buff bots who are light on combat... the cleric has plenty of combat capability, and only had to buff one time. In fact, I'd say of all the classes we played with, cleric is still the most well-rounded.

We're going to try to push through to the end of Keep, but so far things seem very positive. Yes, it is fairly simplified, but I don't consider that a bad thing. I never liked games I had to "study" for.
